Welcome to Dreamfinder Ocicats
Ocicats are beautiful, wild looking cats with wonderful personalities, and they are completely domestic – no wild cat outcrosses. They are very active, affectionate and ready to play, and most try to be friends with everyone – they don’t generally take no for an answer!
The original Ocicat was produced in 1964 by a breeder named Virginia Daly, which was an unexpected result of an experimental breeding between an Abyssinian and a Siamese designed to produce an Abyssinian pointed Siamese. The first kitten was named Tonga. Her daughter named the cat “Ocicat” because of its resemblance to an ocelot.
The Ocicat is a large, active cat with an athletic build and appearance. They are solidly built with short, tight coats that often have a satin sheen. This helps to show off their athletic physique and lovely spots!
Ocicats have a fantastic temperament. I often refer to them as the “Awesome Cat.” Ocicats are confident and friendly, and seem to have the idea that “everyone is going to be their friend.” They tend to be quite extroverted, even around strangers. Many do like to sit on laps once their playtime is over.
An Ocicat is a wonderful addition to most households. They generally adapt readily to most situations, including children and other pets. Ours are raised with our four children, underfoot – and they really are underfoot!
Ocicats tend to be very healthy cats! Careful outcrossing with Abyssinians and the American Shorthair has provided (and continues to provide, in the case of the Abyssinian) genetic diversity to this lovely breed.
